Archdiocesan museum

The Archdiocesan Museum has its seat in the buildings of the former chapter deanery and on the premises of the National Cultural Monument Přemislid Castle. The Bishop’s Palace of Henry Zdík and the Chapel of St Barbara are also included in the exhibition tour. The permanent exhibition of the museum introduces its visitors to the spiritual culture of the Olomouc Archdiocese. A picture gallery offers a collection of top quality paintings accumulated in Olomouc starting in the 16th century. Also of interest is the extensive ”Mozarteum” hall named in commemoration of the stay of the famous musical composer here. The museum offers audio guide in Czech, English, German and Polish.

After having been listed as the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage, the monumental baroque column of the Holy Trinity on the Horní square is probably the most renowned monument in Olomouc.

The Archbishop’s Palace

This magnificent baroque palace has served as the seat of the Olomouc bishops and archbishops since the 16th century. In the year 1848 the longest ruling Hapsburg Franz Joseph I was crowned in the palace. The palace interiors with their richly decorated frescos and stucco work also served as witness to the stay of Pope John Paul II in the year 1995.

The Church of the Visitation of Virgin Mary

Thousands of pilgrims have winded their way to the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary on Svatý Kopeček and it up until today ranks among the most well-known and most frequently visited pilgrimage sites in the Czech Republic. The church was built by the Premonstratensians in the 17th and 18th centuries on the site of a chapel which had been destroyed by the Swedes.

St. Wenceslas Cathedral

This monumental originally Romanesque cathedral from the 12th century is the most renowned Olomouc church. It has experienced a range of reconstructions and at present towers above Olomouc in a neo-gothic form. The cathedral along with its immediate environs make up one of the most picturesque locales in Olomouc.

The Church of St. Moritz

This church, one of the most rare late gothic structures in Moravia, came into being in the 15th century. This unique parish church contains the largest organ in Central Europe, constructed by the Wroclav master Michael Engler in the 18th century and the rare late gothic sculptural group of Christ on the Mount of Olives. The church tower provides tourists with a magnificent view of the city and its surroundings.

Moravian Symphony Orchestra

This, one of the oldest symphony orchestras in the country, has a particularly wide repertoire paying special attention to the great creators of world music of the 19th and 20th centuries with a specific emphasis on the work of Gustav Mahler. It also organises the Olomouc Music Spring international music festival and the international organ.

Moravian Theatre Olomouc

The excellent opera, operetta, ballet and dramatic performances of the Moravian Theatre are a truly pleasant cultural experience. The theatre celebrated the 80th anniversary of the emergence of a permanent Czech professional theatre in Olomouc in the year 2000 with its seat in one of the oldest theatre buildings in the country.

The museum owns an enormous collection of European old masters and a collection of 20th century Czech art. In the extent of its collections it is the third largest institution of its type in the country. Its collection of roughly 60,000 items is made up of paintings, sculptures, drawings, graphic works, photography, furniture and book art.

This valuable historic building is a unique example of the so-called socialist realism

The city hall building has four wings and a yard in the middle. A gothic chapel oriel protrudes from the southern façade. Numerous original arched rooms, including a ceremonial hall, remained well preserved inside.

Olomouc Castle with Church of St. Wenceslas

The Romanesque Bishop’s and Capitular Palace, founded in the beginning of the 12th century, located adjacent to St. Wenceslas Cathedral. The complex is made up of a splendid Gothic cloister with open courtyard and attached Chapels of St. Anne and St. John the Baptist and two original encompassing walls of the Bishop’s Palace with groups of richly decorated Romanesque windows. In June the Romanesque Bishop’s Palace will become part of the new Archdiocese Museum, with exhibitions in the nearby Baroque building of the capitular deanery.

Přemyslid Castle

The Přemyslid Palace forms the centre of the Přemyslid Castle and is part of the Archdiocesan Museum tour. The original grounds were built in the 12th century; following a destructive fire the castle was rebuilt in a Late Romanesque style. The castle was left to the Church after the Přemyslid family died out. At the turn of the century it was reconstructed in a Late Gothic style. After extensive restoration work the castle was reopened to the public in 1988. The entire grounds of the Přemyslid Castle have been registered as a national cultural monument since 1962.

Jánský Salt Cave

The salt cave was built using the latest technology and exclusively with Dead Sea salt; no bonding agents or glues were utilized. The water park offers a year-round recreation pool with a wild river, space bowl, toboggan, water mushroom, pool windows, a wide slide, water cannons, gargoyles and massage benches. The water park also features an indoor children’s pool with waterfall, slide, small gargoyle and jets, and an outdoor pool with massage jets and counter current. An outdoor pool with a toboggan, gargoyle, water wall, trampoline, rope attractions, a waterfall and slide is in operation from June to September. An outdoor pool for children will feature a weir, slide, water hedgehog and wading pools. The water park also offers whirlpools, dry and steam warming rooms, classic sauna, outdoor beach volleyball courts, rope climbing attractions and a large children’s playground.

Arion Fountain

The modern Arion Fountain is located near the corner of the town hall. The subject of the sculptural decoration is the ancient legend of the poet, singer and kithara player Arion, who was rescued from the sea by a dolphin attracted by Arion‘s singing. The Arion Fountain was installed in 2002 during extensive reconstruction work on the Upper Square. The fountain is the work of Ivan Theimer, a native of Olomouc, and architect Angela Chiantelli.

St. Jan Sarkander’s Spring of Living Water Fountain

The contemporary fountain is located in the courtyard at the Chapel of St. Sarkander. The fundamental theme of the work is connected with the spiritual significance of the site. Beginning in the 15th century the town prison stood on the site of today’s Chapel of St. Jan Sarkander. Jan Sarkander was interrogated and tortured in the building in 1620. The fountain’s decoration emphasizes the irreconcilable conflict between good and evil. Evil is symbolized by serpents; the triumph of good and eternal life are symbolized by the wedges used for the crucifixion and Christ’s blossoming wounds that are perpetually cleansed by the sprays of Sarkander’s water. Ceremoniously unveiled in 2007, the fountain is the work of Olomouc native and academic sculptor Otmar Oliva.

Fort no. 2

Fort Radíkov, No. 2 of the Svatý Kopeček fort group, is a part of the royal Olomouc fortress. Built in 1871–1876, it is architecturally and historically unique, the only one of its kind in the Czech Republic. As for its construction, it is a single-rampart artillery fort with 26 cannon and 800 soldiers. Apart from the tour there are outdoor activities available.

The Chapel of St John Sarkander

This chapel, dating from the beginning of the 20th century, stands on the site of the former town prison, in which St. John Sarkander was tortured. It boasts an unusual stone and statue work, as well as an non-traditional exposition of torture devices in the cellar.

Hradisko Monastery in Olomouc

The monastery came into being in the 11th century as the seat of Benedictines. The monks, however, were forced to leave against their will in the 12th century and were replaced by Premonstratensians. Hradisko experienced a range of catastrophic events and was even destroyed several times. Today it carries a baroque look and has served as a military hospital for over 200 years. One of its towers houses an exposition of the history of the monastery.

The Church of St. Mary of the Snow

A typical church of the Jesuit order which came into existence at the beginning of the 18th century and is impressive due to its lovely and extremely richly decorated interiors. The church today serves as a parish church where students congregate amongst others.

The Church of St. Michael

The trinity of baroque copulas of St. Michael’s Church make up the characteristic panorama of the city. This Dominican church was the first copula structure in Moravia. The church came into existence in the 13th century and experienced significant reconstruction after the Swedish occupation in the 17th century. The statues on its main façade rank amongst the highest quality works of Olomouc baroque sculptural work.

Locatelli Bastion

The oldest preserved bastion was built between 1659 and 1676; construction work at the beginning was led by Colonel Locatelli. The last military use of the structure was planned in 1945, when an armoured porthole was installed. The bastion has a preserved postern (a secret exit) that is not open to the public on a regular basis. A summer outdoor cinema and a relaxation area were built on the ground over the bastion.

The Marian Column

The Marian Column (1713–1715) is the dominant feature of the Lower Square. The basic scheme of the column is a variation on the Prague and Vienna plague columns.

Bastion fort model

Olomouc

This model is part of a small permanent exhibit on the history of the bastion fort in Olomouc. The model was made using military topography on the basis of information provided by Ing. Zídka and his notes on this subject from the 1980s, as well as consultations with workers at the National Institute for the Protection and Conservation of Monuments and Sites of the Czech Republic. The exhibit is on permanent display in the Military House at 1. Máje.

Powder Mill

The Powder Mill was built between 1867 and 1870 during the completion of the system of forts in the area surrounding the village of Křelov. The complex was composed of a guardhouse (today’s restaurant) and the actual powder mill (hotel Prachárna). After being abandoned by the Soviet army in the mid-1990s both structures were in a devastated condition; the current owner of the property restored the buildings to their current appearance.

The nature park is located in the south-west portion of the Domašov highlands, in the Bystřice River valley area. The river has made a deep, rocky valley here, with canyons, cliffs, scree and rock beds. In the areas where its tributaries begin, there are preserved remains of peat meadows, and in the valleys one will be enchanted by the wetlands. On the steep wooded slopes are splendid woods, in places reminding one of primeval forests.
