Archbishop’s chateau Kroměříž

Originally a castle, and later a chateau as well as the residence of the Olomouc bishops. After its destruction by the Swedes in the Thirty Years’ War, Bishop Karl II of Liechtenstein-Castelcorn rebuilt it into a sumptuous early baroque palace with an Italian flair. The chateau has exceptionally well-preserved interiors, witnesses to a great number of important events. In 1848 the Austrian Imperial Court sat in the Parliamentary Hall and the Emperor’s Room was host to the Russian Tsar Alexander III in 1885. The gems of the castle are its famed chateau library, with roughly 40 thousand bound titles including graphic works, drawings, and a sheet music archive, and the world famous picture collection, which contains Titian’s Apollo and Marsyas, the most valuable painting in the Czech Republic.

The Archdiocesan Museum has its seat in the buildings of the former chapter deanery and on the premises of the National Cultural Monument Přemislid Castle. The Bishop’s Palace of Henry Zdík and the Chapel of St Barbara are also included in the exhibition tour. The permanent exhibition of the museum introduces its visitors to the spiritual culture of the Olomouc Archdiocese. A picture gallery offers a collection of top quality paintings accumulated in Olomouc starting in the 16th century. Also of interest is the extensive ”Mozarteum” hall named in commemoration of the stay of the famous musical composer here. The museum offers audio guide in Czech, English, German and Polish.

Týn nad Bečvou

Helfštýn Castle was founded in the 13th century on a ridge above the Bečva River valley, to protect the main road to Silesia. It supposedly carries the name of the predatory knight Helfried (Friduš) of Linava, who founded it. It was intentionally demolished in the 17th century. Today tourists can view its extensive system of fortifications, with six gates, many towers, buildings, walls and a series of ramparts.

Šternberk Castle was founded in the second half of the 13th century, most likely by Zdeslav of Chumec and Šternberk. Further construction was carried out at the end of the 15th century under the rule of the Berks of Dubá and Lipá. In the 16th century the originally gothic castle was reconstructed in the renaissance style.

The basis of the collection is composed of props used by a local theatrical company in the 1950s. One interesting item, for example, is a theatre curtain; other objects include folk costumes, samples of period home furnishings and old school items. Displays of agriculture and crafts items are found in the attic of the museum. A wooden cannon used during town celebrations is a unique item in the collection. Several sets of photographs and postcards related to life in the village are also on display. Additional interesting exhibits include game pictures and clocks.

Hunting-forestry museum

The hunting-forestry museum is a unique institution of its kind in Central Europe. The interiors of the chateau in Úsov contain hunting and natural science collections from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The rich collections of animal life include items from not only the extensive Liechtenstein estates, but also from hunting trips to Poland, Italy, Africa and India.

The museum features a permanent exhibition of 18th and 19th century coaches and their accessories. The museum also offers a large-screen film presentation accompanied by sound effects from the distant past; visitors can experience an eclipse at any time of the day. In addition, visitors can see how historic coach lanterns operated years ago. The entire program is accompanied by a guide in period costume.

In the extent of its collections it is the third largest institution of its type in the country. The Romanesque Bishop’s and Capitular Palace, founded in the beginning of the 12th century, located adjacent to St. Wenceslas Cathedral. The complex is made up of a splendid Gothic cloister with open courtyard and attached Chapels of St. Anne and St. John the Baptist and two original encompassing walls of the Bishop’s Palace with groups of richly decorated Romanesque windows. In June the Romanesque Bishop’s Palace will become part of the new Archdiocese Museum, with exhibitions in the nearby Baroque building of the capitular deanery.

Tovačov is surrounded by water and alluvial forest on three sides. According to legend, the castle was founded as a sanctuary for hunters. It was reconstructed as a renaissance chateau by the last of the Cimburks. The characteristic feature of the chateau is its nearly 100m high Spanish tower, from atop of which visitors have an unforgettable and unspoiled view of the surroundings. Of interest are its chateau chapel with early baroque stucco work and a staircase in the chateau’s left wing styled after that in the Vienna Opera House.

Úsov is one of the oldest preserved North Moravian castle and is built in the French style. It suffered significant damage during the Swedish occupation in the year 1643 only to be restored at the end of the 17th century during the time of Lord Jan Adam of Liechtenstein. He had a three-storey palace built with a monumental staircase designed by the Italian architect Domenic Martinelli with part of the castle thus taking on a chateau character. The chateau hunting-forestry museum was founded in the year 1898 and is a unique collection throughout all of Central Europe.

Part of the museum is a gallery dedicated to famous sons and daughters of Kojetín and an exhibition hall of contemporary artists.

A unique museum devoted to the past and present of production of the famous delicacy

On the spot of the original A.W. company plant, a museum was built in 1994, and a new shop has been open next to the production plant at Palackého street. Tools used in the production of mature curd cheese are installed in the museum. Curd milling and pressing is documented in the cellar, while production is shown on the other floors. You can see a video recording of current production, as well as production around 1920.

A renovated 1850 estate in the spa town of Slatinice offers history, relaxation, sport, entertainment and sightseeing. Located on an area of 400 m2 is a collection of vintage cars and motorcycles (Mercedes Benz, BMW, KdF) mostly from the 1930s, as well as a number of period artefacts. The cars and motorcycles on display are either operable or under repair.

Adolf Kašpar Monument

The renowned Czech book illustrator Adolf Kašpar used to live in this house every year during the summer with his family and it now houses in the attic a small museum with the painter’s studio with his work table and church and a collection of well-known illustrations to the works of various Czech literary classics. The ground floor of the museum contains an exposition dedicated to the history of Loštice along with occasional extra exhibitions.

The uniqueness of the Hranice synagogue has to do with its position. Because of lack of space between neighbouring buildings, the builders did not orient it toward Jerusalem, but toward the east. It was constructed in the Moorish-Byzantine Hranicestyle and was founded during the time of the greatest expansion of the Jewish area in Hranice, on the site of an older wooden temple, in 1864. Today it houses exhibitions of modern art and is also used as a concert hall. The existence of the Jewish community in Hranice is also witnessed by the nearby Jewish cemetery, the oldest tombstone of which is from the year 1686.

Originally, a fort stood on the site of the chateau in Čechy pod Kosířem, which was rebuilt into a chateau from 1839–1846. The greatest role in the chateau’s and town’s history was played by the Silva-Taroucci family.

The history of the Hranice chateau begins with the building of a stronghold, first mentioned in 1398. The stronghold was first improved as a stone castle, which was rebuilt and extended by the Pernsteins. The Pernsteins also built the main tower, from which remain Late Gothic elements to this day. Another of its owners, Jan Kropáč of Nevědomí, rebuilt the castle into a two-winged Renaissance chateau, and its following owner, Zdeněk Žampach of Potstein, reconstructed the chateau in its present form. The chateau underwent extensive reconstruction in the years 1996–1998 and is today one of the most beautiful Late Renaissance buildings in Moravia.

The chateau at Náměšť na Hané features unique collections not found anywhere else in the country. Visitors may view the collection of Meissen porcelain and the gold ceremonial and black travelling coaches of the Olomouc bishops and archbishops from the 18th to the 20th century. The tour also takes you through the chateau gallery and the Empire style chateau chapel. The chateau park, with its four paths oriented to the points of the compass, is also worth seeing.

Reflected in the waters of the Plumlov reservoir is the monumental Plumlov Chateau. This Early Mannerist chateau was built on the site of a castle from the 13th century in 1680 by Jan Adam of Liechtenstein. Originally four large wings were planned; only one was built. Its most impressive feature is its façade, incorporating massive columns.
