Definition of the Central Moravia region comes from political borders of the districts Olomouc, Přerov, and Prostějov. Geographically, it is the foothills of the Nízký Jeseník Mountains, the bottom land of the Morava River with wide Haná lowland, the Moravian Gate (Moravská brána) with the Bečva River and a margin of the Drahanská vrchovina (uplands). As this description shows, the Central Moravia region is very variable area with features characteristic for lowlands, uplands, and highlands. The main stone of a natural richness of the Central Moravia region is an unaffected flow of the Morava River with adjacent floodplain forest and alluvial meadows, the Hranická propast (gorge) and the Zbrašovské Aragonitové jeskyně (caves) in the Moravian Gate, and also many of the zoologically and botanically important habitats of the Nízký Jeseník Mountains and the Drahanská vrchovina.
Olomouc
Thanks to its unique collections, numbering thousands of pieces, the borders of Central Moravia are often extended abroad. One item of interest, for example, is an exposition entitled Olomouc Over the Centuries which will acquaint you with the rich history of Olomouc in an unusual fashion.
Horka nad Moravou, Litovel, Moravičany, Střeň
Between the ancient towns of Olomouc and Mohelnice, right in the heart of Haná, extends the CHKO Litovelské Pomoraví – the Litovel Morava Riverlands Protected Nature Area. It is made up of an area of extensive alluvial meadows, unique in all of Europe. At the core of the entire complex is a natural phenomenon – a landlocked river delta. In addition to the lands of the Protected Nature Area it encompasses the hilly Doubrava leafy woods and the krast peak Třesín with the accessible and richly ornamental Mladeč Caves.
Javoříčko, Luká
Some of the most beautiful caves are located in the Špraněk Protected Nature Area. Parts of these three-storey caverns, which have not yet revealed their full mystery, were discovered in 1938 after arduous crawling; difficult exploration of other rooms continued in the 1950s. Your imagination will come alive at a view of the mysterious lower chamber, not open to the public. The difficult labyrinth is woven by passages connected to a chasm which falls to a depth of 60 metres and has not yet been fully explored.
These caves of European renown are located in a picturesque river valley at the Teplice nad Bečvou spa and are the warmest caves in the Czech Republic. Their name is due to their unique decoration – the mineral aragonite in the form of white crystals and blossoms covering all the walls of the cave. Also famous are the geyser stalagmites reaching a height of two metres, created around the emergence of hot sulphur from below.
Teplice nad Bečvou
This eerie chasm is the deepest chasm in the Czech Republic and neighbouring countries. It was likely created after the fall-in of cave roofs created in the block of limestone there. Of its origin there is also the legend of the profligate knight Rolf, whose punishment was to fall deep into the ground, along with his castle and entourage.
This project is co-financed by the European Union and the Olomouc region.
