The oldest documented caves in Central Europe with the first reference dating back to the year 1430. The four hundred metre long labyrinth of corridors and cracks often served as a hiding place in early times as can be seen from the numerous epigraphical writings on the walls. These caves have been displaying their beauties to tourists for almost half a century. The entire viewing trail, 230 metres long, has been made handicapped accessible which is unfortunately not common in the Czech Republic.

Take a walk on the unique 3 kilometre long Rejvíz instructional trail! You will see the largest peat bog in Moravia with its origins dating back 6 to 7 thousand years and perhaps even get a glimpse of certain rare species of plants and animals. The wooden path which protects the national nature reserve from damage leads all the way to the large moss lake.

This imposing baroque church looms above the historical centre of the town. The remains of the old cemetery nearby, whose oldest gravestone carries the date August 7, 1649 should not be missed.

The town museum exhibits examples of medieval as well as contemporary mining, with the opportunity to see what a medieval mining tunnel looked like. This is supplemented by an exposition about the “Witch Trials” with a torture chamber and “ The Zlaté hory micro-region in photographs and postcards” as well as “Goldmine mills on the Olešnice”.

Pilgrimmage Church of the Virgin Mary the Helper – Maria Hilf

The site began to draw its first pilgrims in the 17th century. Within ten years a chapel was built on the site of the birth of a baby boy named Martin and in a short time at least five miraculous recoveries occurred. Due to the growing number of believers the wooden chapel was replaced by a brick church in the years 1834 – 1841.

If you’re going to take a trip to these far reaches, which are laced with rare metals, do not omit a visit to the Ztracených Štol Valley. The Olešnice Stream, for millions of years, has deposited gold into the silt and after eras upon eras it became sedimentary rock. Today in the valley a replica of a medieval mining town is being built. Already in operating order are two screws for bringing up gold ore and a gold ore mill, constructed according to plans of the era. You can even try panning for gold!
