From the historical point of view the Jeseníky region has to be perceived as two units separated by natural borderline of mountain crests. The southern part, i.e. Šumperk Region, and northern section called Jesenice Region, differed from each other substantially in their cultural development during prehistoric time already. In the historical time, following the establishment of boundaries of mediaeval countries the Šumperk Region was part of Moravia when as Jesenice Region belonged to Silesia.
Velké Losiny

The rare original preserved chateau interiors present the lives of noble familes in the 16th century. The second floor even contains the court and the hall where the witch inquisition trials took place in the second half of the 17th century where the tribunal had 56 victims burned at the stake. This dark side of the chateau is dealt with in a book by Václav Kaplický A Witches’ Hammer and in a film of the same name by Otakar Vávra.
Javorník

Zlaté Hory

The town museum exhibits examples of medieval as well as contemporary mining, with the opportunity to see what a medieval mining tunnel looked like. This is supplemented by an exposition about the “Witch Trials” with a torture chamber and “ The Zlaté hory micro-region in photographs and postcards” as well as “Goldmine mills on the Olešnice”.
Javorník

This ancient seat of the Wroclaw bishops, laid out on a spur of land above the town, is first mentioned as a Gothic castle as early as the year 1307. It was reconstructed into a Renaissance chateau over the years 1482–89 and later underwent Baroque changes which now make it one of the best preserved examples of this style in the Czech part of Silesia.
Staré Město
These Czechoslovak border defence fortifications built over the years 1937 – 1938 against the aggression of fascist Germany, ranked at the time amongst the most efficient fortification systems in Europe.
Šumperk

The exposition dedicated to the nature and history of north-west Moravia will give you the opportunity to see the plant and animal kingdom of the Šumperk and Jeseník micro-regions. The exposition also contains coloured photographs, genuine bryophytes, lichens and mushrooms, shells, castings, slides of fish as well as live specimens in aquariums. Also here is an exposition mapping out the history of the north-west of Moravia.
